Parts of Speech - English Grammar

Parts of Speech are the words divided into different kinds or classes according to their use in a sentence. The parts of speech explain how a word is used in a sentence.

1. Noun 2. Pronoun 3. Verb 4. Adjective 5. Adverb 6. Preposition 7. Conjunction 8. Interjection.

1. Noun (संज्ञा) - A noun is the name of a person, place, thing or idea.

Examples of nouns: Pawan, Delhi, chair, courage, dog, hope

Example sentences: Pawan lives in Delhi.

2. Pronoun (सर्वनाम) - A pronoun is a word used in place of a noun or noun phrase to avoid repetition in a sentence.

Examples of pronouns: I, we, you, they, he, she, it, me, us, them, him, her, this, these, those

Example sentences:

Ravi is absent, because he is ill.

3. Verb (क्रिया) - A verb is a word used to show an action or state of being. A verb shows what someone or something is doing.

Examples: run, speak, come, eat, play, live, walk, has, like, are, is, was

Example sentences:

Geeta wrote a letter to her father.

He is a doctor.

4. Adjective (विशेषण) - An adjective is a word used to qualify a noun or pronoun. It describes, modifies or gives more information about a noun or pronoun.

Examples: big, sad, brave, young, pink, crazy, three

Example sentences:

He is a brave boy.

5. Adverb (क्रिया-विशेषण) - An adverb is a word used to add something to the meaning of a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. It describes/modifies a verb, an adjective or another adverb. It tells how, where, when, how often or to what extent. Many adverbs end in -LY

Examples: slowly, quietly, never, quickly, always, very, hard, too, well, tomorrow, here etc.

Example sentences:

He worked hard. This flower is very beautiful.

6. Preposition (सम्बन्धसूचक अव्यय) - A preposition shows the relationship of a noun or pronoun to another word (verb, noun or pronoun). They can indicate time, place, or relationship.

Examples: in, at, on, into, from, with, near, between, about, under

Example sentences:

The pen is on the table.

The girl is fond of music.

7. Conjunction (सम्मुचयबोधक अव्यय) - A conjunction is a word used to join two words or sentences. It joins two words, ideas, phrases or clauses together in a sentence and shows how they are connected.

Examples: and, or, but, because, so, yet, unless, since, till, until, if.

Example sentences:

Two and two make four.

He ran fast but missed the train.

8. Interjection (विस्मयादिबोधक अव्यय) - An interjection is a word which expresses some sudden feeling. It expresses a strong feeling or emotion. It is a short exclamation.

Examples: Hurrah! Alas! Ouch! Wow! Great! Help! Oh! Hey! Hi!

Example sentences:

Hurrah! We have won the match.

Wow! I passed my English test.

Joins two words or sentences
Since, unless, until, till, and, but, when
Ram and Ravi are my brothers.
8. Interjection
Short exclamation
Hurrah! Oh! Hi! Ouch!
Wow! It’s great.
